Volunteer work at Beijing East Road Primary School



On the afternoon of April 1st, our class visited
We arrived at the primary school at 3.00p.m. I remembered that Ms. Bartell had told us that the students we were going to teach were in Grade 5, so I thought it would be a piece of cake to teach them English. Ms. Bartell and their English teacher spared a boy to me who sat in the middle of the first row of the classroom.
The boy’s name was Li Tianchi. After a few words, I found that he was not a common boy like others. He was strong and tried to play joke on me by beating me for several times at the beginning. Ms. Bartell told me that he was the naughtiest student of the class. I finally understood why he sat in this place. It was a big challenge for me to teach him. I knew that if I appeared to be very angry and beat him back, it would not be the best way to solve the problem. I attempted to call away his attention from beating me, and started to teach him how to say and spell the names of some countries, languages and people in English on Ms. Bartell’s sheet. At the very beginning, he filled a few of them and he tried to look up the words he did not know in his e-dictionary. However, I realized that he was showing off his e-dictionary to me, that he always told me how cool the e-dictionary was and he even tried to play games or take photos with it. “I promise, if we finished our mission earlier, we can play games in your e-dictionary together. But now, you cannot. It is only used to look up the words!” I said to him with patience and he promised me as well.
After we finished filling the worksheet, I asked him to read the dialogues on his English book. It was just like what Ms. Bartell had said, that he was able to read all the sentences correctly, but he was just like a reading robot. However, his voice was much louder than others. I could say that his voice was the loudest in this class. When I was teaching him how to read without Chinese accent, he put his foot on the desk and tried to talk to other students. His attention was distracted from his book. I kept quiet and waited for him, but he talked even more and more loudly. I understood the reason why he was so naughty for he wanted to attract other’s attention; he wanted other people all look at him. My long silence seemed make him feel uncomfortable. He came to read book again without a word.
I realized I needed to change the way I taught him. I chose to talk to him and let him find some interests in English, instead of reading books wearily. I told him “Li Tianchi, do you want to speak English as naturally and fluently as us? Do you want to be outstanding in English?” “Eh…yes, of course.” he answered. “How is your oral English in your class? Is it Excellent, poor or so-so?” “So-so” “How do you think of the students which have high oral English skills? Your pronunciation is really weaker than them, isn’t it?” “No! I am able to be much better than anyone.” He answered me very quickly; I knew that I had caught his attention successfully. “Ok, do you know how to improve it?” “Eh…I don’t know.” “Fine, let me tell you what superiority you have.” At this moment, I totally got his attention.
“You are daring to speak very loudly. Did you hear your voice just now? I think it is the loudest in the class. Maybe you only think it is funny or you can get other’s attention by this. However, some students are not as brave as you to speak English so loudly. Your loud voice can help you easily find your mistakes in the pronunciation, so you will improve faster than others. It is your talent, isn’t it? Nobody had told you or taught you this before. These students have better pronunciation because they spend their time practicing and learning it, but they cannot learn how to have this talent! He silenced for a moment, and then told me. “Yes, I know if I try my best to learn English, I can be the most excellent English-speaker in your class. Thank you. I know what I am going to do. I will keep your words in my mind.” We finished the talking as the bell rang. I could easily see the difference of him between and after the conversation. Ms. Bartell told me I had done a good job. He was quiet and thought of something in his mind, and I did not want to disturb him. I wished our conversation could make him change a lot.
It was really a great opportunity for me to have such a close feeling to be a teacher. I eventually understood it is not as easy as I imagined being a teacher. They need to have such large responsibilities to educate students. A good teacher educates or treats the students like their real children. Their job is not only to teach students knowledge, but also educate them how to grow up correctly. From this volunteer work in the primary school, I found that I was quite suitable to be a teacher. I was able to educate any students even they are very naughty just like Li. During this volunteer work, I also showed the patience and wisdom when I was teaching Li.
In addition, it was a good chance for us to train our skills of communicating to young students. I know how to talk to these naughty boys and how to let them pay attention to one thing. It can train my discernment; I know how to find others’ talents or some special characteristics which other people do not have. To be a real teacher, I need to be very patient with my students. I cannot easily appear angry. Sometimes, we need to educate students in a special way. Some students cannot focus on one thing for a long time. I need to catch their attention and take them back to study.
In the future, I may not be a teacher, but this experience is also very valuable for me. I should pay responsibilities on my job just like teachers should be responsible to their students. When I face some problems or challenges, I should use my brain to come up with some new and creative ideas. Also, I think the boys would really keep this experience in his mind. When he gets low marks or has troubles in studying, it would remind him of that talking. I wish he really tries his best to study English and love English. It was an unforgettable experience and I learned a lot from this volunteer work.

Someone was reading a poem.
On the afternoon of December 24,
When I entered the big hall of this church, the interior decoration attracted my eyes. I found the church was magnificent. I read the brochure and introduction about Christmas which they had given to me before. At 6.30 p.m., the ceremony started as one of the nuns leaded people to sing a song. Honestly, this song was long and strange, I totally did not know what the meaning of this song was. Luckily, I could be sure that song was in English because I heard some English words, but it was still very weird. Then, one of the nuns read some sentences, and other people followed her. I guessed that they were praying. After that, they started to read something that I did not understand again. I knew I should show respect to this religious service, but I could not help to yawn and I would nearly fall asleep. So did
From this religious service, I only knew some information about Christmas, Jesus and Protestantism from reading the brochure and introduction which they had given me when I entered the church. Although I did not understand the detail meaning of the service held in the church, I still could see that the belief that Christian have to the God. They considered that kind peoplewould be treated nice and bad people would be punished.
I felt it was boring and I did not like it. I did not understand what they said and what the song meant. I thought I would get some interests in it if they could read the poems which I was able to understand at least. In my imagination, it should be a great party or event to celebrate Christmas, but it was definitely not as interesting as I imagined. Maybe it also showed that I was lack of the knowledge about Protestantism.

Although the training was really hard and we were all very exhausted, we still had a good time during those days. In the evening before we left, our Grade 10 and Grade 11 students came together and we had an evening party. Our drillmaster told us that “It is the time to prove our courage. Go and have a show!” Of course, we did not want our drillmaster feel disappointed, so we prepared for the coming wonderful evening in the afternoon.
In the party, we 9 boys from 10-A sang a song called “The End of The World”. Honestly, it was my first time to sing a song in front of such numbers of people. When I stood on the stage, I felt butterfly in my stomach. I encouraged myself”Go! That’s it! I can do it!”, but I was still so nervous that I even forgot to sing the first sentence. I got stage fright. When we were singing the song, I could hear lots of people cheering for us. It made me become a little bit confident of myself. ”I’m not so bad.” I thought. It was still clear in my mind that when the song was over, I could see lots of people clapping and cheering for us. I went down the stage with a sweet smile on my face. I took a deep breath and I knew my debut was perfect! It was a really unforgettable experience for us.
I felt fantastic about this performance. Although I felt nervous at the beginning, I still did a very good job. We 9 boys got lots of supports and cheers. It was my first time to act in a performance in front of so many students. I found my way to show my talents to other people. I learned that we need to catch every opportunity to show and improve our abilities to others. Don’t be shy and scared. I also learned that it is very important to be full of confidence to face every challenge in our lives.
Fashion Show in GCA

On the evening of April 26, 2009, there was a fashion show held in GCA. Students needed to wear the clothes which they designed; some of the clothes were even made by themselves. It was really exciting and we have prepared for this evening for a long time. We cannot wait to see how fantastic the show would be. I went to the show with my classmates. The fashion show started at 6.00p.m in the courtyard of GCA, but we attend at 6.10p.m.
When we were arriving at the courtyard, the show had been on for a moment. I saw my classmates walking on the catwalk. Sky wore the school uniform which they designed. The black tie fits him perfectly, and the shirt looked very relaxed on him. Then, Helen walked on the catwalk, she wore a casual party clothes. She looked pretty beautiful on it. Rita was a member of my group. She wore the dress which designed and made by Selina. It was even better than we imagined before. She looked perfect on it. I was proud of her. Also, there were many teachers wearing the clothes designed by students. Mr. Shapour dressed like an astronaut. It brought us a lot of fun. Ms. Chu and Ms. Hadley were very charming on the stage. Students took as many pictures as they could to treasure this fantastic fashion show.
I liked this fashion show. It was a good stage for us to show our talents and abilities. Also, we can know more about our classmates and friends by the show. It also showed me the styles of clothes which students in GCA like. I think the show was exciting and interesting. We prepared for that evening for a long time. Our group put efforts into it and we looked forward to seeing the smile and cheers from other students and teachers. It was really exciting to show our final work in front of all GCA. Also, it brought us lots of fun. It was a good and special stage for students to show people how cool they were. When I saw these funny clothes on my friends, I could not help laughing.
Throughout the fashion show, I find that there are different styles of clothing all over the world. The fashion show could help us know the fashion trends in GCA. Some clothes are in western styles especially like some party clothes, but some clothes are in Chinese styles like. The differences between the styles of clothes may show us the differences of cultures. We may go abroad to study in 2 years, it was very important for us to know these differences. In addition, knowing these differences clearly can help us to be easier and faster to adapt ourselves to the new environment.
